Reviews and Recommendations

In order to help you find the music you enjoy most, we have organized this page into three parts. The first section contains musical commentary for a list of composers who's music we have reviewed, the second section contains a list of performing groups, and the third section provides a listing by instrument.

Composers

Beethoven Piano Concertos

Brahms: Violin Sonatas nos 1 - 3 - Sonata No. 1 in G major is Marian's favorite violin sonata.

Mozart: Great Piano Concertos and Mozart Great Piano Concertos v. 2 - Mozart composing for the piano. 'nuff said!

Performing Groups

Joshua Bell

The Red Violin - DVD is an outstanding movie. The wonderful story of a violin from its construction during a tragic time in the life of a young Renaissance wife and mother through various twists and turns of life to a modern-day auction house where yet another act of intrigue awaits it. The Red Violin - Soundtrack recording captures the emotion of John Corigliano's original score as though you were sitting in the room with Joshua Bell as he plays for you. From the violin's birth as given in Anna's Theme through the masterful etudes of a young child prodigy, past erstwhile English lovers and a China that has seemingly abandoned the performing arts entirely, the Red Violin comes to rest - briefly - at auction. Sensuous, eerie, and at times playful, this soundtrack will connect with you as little from the motion picture industry has. Both Marian and David recommend this one highly.

Piano

Mozart: Great Piano Concertos and Mozart Great Piano Concertos v. 2 - Mozart composing for the piano. 'nuff said!

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas (Moonlight, Pathétique, Appassionata) - beautiful, simple, sweet. The Moonlight Sonata is a favorite of budding musicians all over, and the Pathétique, although more complex, is also relaxing and enjoyable.

Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 and Violin Concerto in D major - bold and Russian, this piano concerto will grab the attention of even the most reluctant classical music afficianado.

Lang Lang - this collection provides a fresh new perspective on Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn from a fine up-and-coming artist. Highly recommended!
